Patina Flats

Turning Rust into Global Trust on the Great Lakes. Patina Flats is a brand identity project done for Michael Trebilcock– he came to us with a vision of using real-estate to uplift the community and foster participation. Our goal was to create a visual identity for this historical Westinghouse factory rooted in rust belt history, transformation, and nature– with a hint of technology.

Our explorations eventually led us to the unique melding of brand elements under the theme of “living arcs,” influenced by the natural resilience of willow trees found near the Great Lakes, the arches found within the physical factory, and the arcs formed between two electrical discharges. The later being a homage to George Westinghouse– a titan of the electrical industry.

As part of this branding initiative, I played roles in forming our visual directions to the creation of the logo and moments of delightful motion.

One of our largest sources of inspiration was born from the renaming of Westinghouse to Patina Flats. Patina is a thin layer that often forms on the surface of copper, brass, bronze and similar metals after oxidizing for long periods of time. This common piece of chemistry would become a visual goldmine for our team throughout this process.
